Nydia Velazquez's political relationships have been shaped by her role as a progressive outsider who gradually built a network of allies across multiple levels of New York government. Velazquez has cultivated what City & State NY described as a community of like-minded progressive Democratic politicians through recruiting, endorsing, advising, and active mentorship . Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is among the most prominent members of this network. Velazquez helped elevate Reynoso's political career, including supporting his successful 2013 City Council campaign to defeat a candidate backed by then-Brooklyn Democratic boss Vito Lopez . Brooklyn Political Antagonists
Velazquez spent much of her career in opposition to the Brooklyn Democratic machine.
