Speed Over Bureaucracy. Instead of waiting years for government tech that arrives already outdated, PIT Crews promise to move from idea to working product in months — a real shift from how city IT projects have historically been handled.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has started five "Public Interest Technology" (PIT) Crews. These groups of in-house technologists are paired with city agencies to build faster, easier digital services. The $5 million initiative will hire 30 specialists and is backed in part by the Rockefeller Foundation.
NYC's government tech has long been criticized for slow, outdated systems that frustrate residents. Rather than contracting out costly multi-year IT projects, Mamdani's PIT Crews are modeled on agile private-sector teams, aiming to take ideas from concept to launch in months. The first crew tackles his new "Click to Cancel" subscription protection rule.
