Mayor Zohran Mamdani pledged Tuesday that the encampments of unhoused New Yorkers along Manhattan's West Side will be cleared. Critics say the administration was too slow to act, while supporters say his outreach-first approach is more humane than resorting to police sweeps.
Mamdani took office in January and shifted encampment policy away from NYPD-led sweeps, requiring seven days of outreach by the Department of Homeless Services before any site can be cleared. The West Side encampment, stretching from 34th to 46th Street along 11th Avenue, has been growing for months and drew dozens of registered complaints in June. Outreach involves placing unhoused people in shelters and medical care facilities, if needed.
