Governor Hochul and lawmakers are close to agreeing on eliminating lengthy environmental reviews for many housing projects, potentially speeding up apartment construction by months or years while sparking debate over environmental protections.
The State Environmental Quality Review Act has required extensive environmental assessments since 1976. Hochul proposed exempting housing projects up to 250 units in NYC from these reviews as part of her housing agenda to address the supply crisis.
