Brooklyn College Gun Incident (October 2023)
On October 12, 2023, Vernikov attended a pro-Palestinian rally near Brooklyn College as a counter-protester in the days following Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel. Photographs and videos circulated on social media showing what appeared to be a handgun protruding from the front of her waistband . The NYPD confirmed that the butt end of a firearm was visible in images taken at the scene . Although Vernikov held a valid concealed carry license, New York State law prohibits bringing firearms to sensitive locations, including protests and educational institutions, and requires that licensed firearms remain concealed .
On October 13, 2023, Vernikov surrendered to the NYPD at the 70th Precinct, accompanied by her attorney, and was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, a Class E felony . She surrendered both the weapon and her gun permit and was issued a desk appearance ticket . The City Council speaker at the time referred the matter to the Standards and Ethics Committee, and Governor Kathy Hochul stated publicly that the state's gun safety laws apply to everyone .
On November 17, 2023, the Brooklyn District Attorney's office dismissed the charge. Vernikov's selection as co-chair of the Council's Bipartisan Task Force to Combat Antisemitism in January 2026 generated significant controversy.
