After ICE traffic stop shootings resulted in the deaths of two people in Maine and Texas in the last week, Homeland Security advised agents to pause stopping people in vehicles. Trump reversed the pause less than 24 hours later after facing criticism from his MAGA base. He posted on Truth Social that traffic stops are "one of ICE's most important and effective crime fighting tools."
Since Trump's second term began, ICE agents have shot and allegedly killed at least 10 people in the field, nearly all during vehicle stops including most recently Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine. The incidents follow the ICE-related shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Peretti In Minneapolis and Keith Porter in Los Angeles in the last year. ICE agents involved in the recent shootings were not wearing body cameras, despite a prior directive requiring them to do so. Dozens more have died in ICE custody by being denied essential healthcare and medicines.
