Mayor Zohran Mamdani changed the traditional Puerto Rican Day reception from a large Thursday evening celebration to a smaller weekend breakfast, sparking criticism from community leaders who say he's breaking decades of tradition.
Previous mayors Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio held large Puerto Rican receptions in Gracie Mansion's back garden on the Thursday before the parade, scheduled for June 14 this year. The rescheduled Mamdani event also clashes with a breakfast Congressman Adriano Espaillat's event honoring retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez. Mamdani has endorsed Espaillat’s challenger in the Democratic primary, and broke with Velázquez to endorse against her preferred successor, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso - endorsing Latino candidates in each race: Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez.
