Ossé’s run could energize the progressive base and push the Democratic Party toward bolder, younger leadership.

Brooklyn City Council Member Chi Ossé, a progressive ally of Zohran Mamdani, has filed paperwork to challenge U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in the 2026 Democratic primary.
Ossé, 27, was first elected to the City Council in 2021 and is a prominent voice on the left. Jeffries, meanwhile, withheld endorsement of Mamdani early on, sparking tension with younger progressives.
