Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the first formerly undocumented member of Congress, called for ICE to be fully dismantled at the Hill Nation Summit. He said the agency has a "culture of violence" baked into its DNA and is "beyond reform." His remarks came after three recent deaths connected to ICE shootings in Texas, Maine, and Florida.
Espaillat has long been a vocal critic of aggressive immigration enforcement. His call to dismantle ICE reflects a growing divide in the Democratic Party over whether the agency can be reformed or should be replaced entirely. However, during his recent Democratic primary loss to Daraliza Avila Chevalier, Espaillat's opponent pointed out that he also received campaign contributions from companies with ICE contracts and said the longtime incumbent did not help Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil when he was detained by ICE.
