After ICE agents fatally shot two people during traffic stops in Texas and Maine, Homeland Security put a halt on stopping people in their vehicles. Trump reversed course within 24 hours because of MAGA backlash. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed him, saying Trump "has an agency shooting people out in the street....at this point it's practically a campaign promise from this guy."
Since Trump relaunched mass deportations in January 2025, at least 11 people have been killed in encounters with ICE, five of them in vehicles. Democrats had previously pushed back after ICE-related killings in Minnesota but could not stop the "One Big, Beautiful Bill," which renewed ICE's budget to the tune of $70 billion. AOC and the Progressive Caucus were opposed to bill because of the ICE funding provision but were overridden by other Democrats.
